Acupuncture for Post Herpetic Neuralgia
Post Herpetic Neuralgia persist as burning and lingering pain even after resolution of blisters and rashes of Herpes. The patient may feel a continuous burning pain, episodes of severe shooting or electric like pain or painful sensation to normal touch. It persists for a long time and is recurrent in nature.
Post herpes pain occurs due to damage to the nerve which was affected by the herpes virus. PHN occurs more often in the elderly and in people with diabetes mellitus and is often very painful and can be quite debilitating.
Acupuncture is extremely helpful in relieving the pain and abnormal sensation by promoting the healing of nerves.
Topical and oral medications can be used in combination for pain. Anticonvulsant and antidepressants also reduce PHN. Use of opioid is limited due to potential for abuse and addiction.
